GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is entry level, semi-skilled manual labor, constructing, maintaining and repairing roadways, drainage systems and associated assets. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader and the Public Works Supervisor.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists higher level workers in maintenance of concrete, asphalt, drainage facilities, signage, markings, and vegetation within public right of ways.
- Assists in routine repair of asphalt roads, sidewalks, and trails including pothole repair, road patching, road resurfacing, and road base repair.
- Assists in demolition, forming, and placing of concrete necessary for maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, inlets, etc. associated with public right of ways.
- Assists in cleaning and maintenance of drainage facilities including pipes, structures, underground drains, inlets, and basins.
- Assists in mowing, maintaining, grading, and cleaning open drainage swales and basins.
- Assists in mowing, maintaining, and cleaning of road right of ways including vegetation cut back, trimming, edging, pruning of vegetation, tree trimming, irrigation system repair, sweeping, litter and leaf collection, application of herbicide, and application of fertilizer.
- Performs routine landscaping maintenance of public grounds including mowing, trimming, edging, grading, sod removal and installation, irrigation system repair, litter and leaf collection, application of herbicide, and application of fertilizer.
- Sets up barricades and other temporary traffic control devices in accordance with standards and provides flagging services for work crews working within flowing traffic.
- Services, performs maintenance on, and washes vehicles and equipment.
- Uses and maintains power hand tools such as drills, saws, chainsaws, etc. as needed to complete assigned tasks.
- Assists and supports City activities that require moving and lifting heavy items.
- Assists and supports City special events and programs by closing streets, erecting tents, setting up tables and chairs, etc.
- Operates vehicles and light equipment.
- Operates heavy equipment.
- Comprehends and adheres to City policies, procedures, and safety regulations while performing tasks.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. One (1) year of related manual labor experience.
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of general facilities and street maintenance tasks and procedures.
- Knowledge of ground maintenance and installation and proper equipment.
- Skill in operation and maintenance of equipment and tools related to the position.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Works out-of-doors in various weather conditions with: dust, dirt, noise.
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
- Moderate to heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.
- Equipment operation.
- Physical activity to include but not limited to: walking, standing, stooping, driving, bending and kneeling.
